How to Care for Your Wig — Because Your Hair Deserves the Best, Sis

Let’s be honest. You spent good money on that unit. Whether it’s a silky Vietnamese straight, a bouncy Brazilian body wave, or a flawless HD lace front — your wig is an investment, and it deserves to be treated like one.

The good news? Caring for your wig is not complicated at all. You just need to know what you’re doing. So pull up a chair, grab your favourite drink, and let’s talk hair care like the sisters we are. 🤍

And if you haven’t found your dream unit yet — browse our full collection at fhairline.com/shop and treat yourself, gorgeous!

1. Washing Your Wig 🚿

Over-washing is one of the biggest mistakes wig owners make. Unless you’re wearing your wig every single day, washing it every 10 to 15 wears is plenty. Washing too often strips the hair of its natural moisture and causes unnecessary shedding — and nobody wants that!

Here’s your wash day routine:

Step 1 — Detangle first. Always work through knots before getting the hair wet. Use a wide tooth comb and work from the ends up to the roots, never the other way around.

Step 2 — Use cold or lukewarm water only. Hot water loosens the weft (the track that holds the hair together) and can damage your lace.

Step 3 — Use a sulphate-free shampoo. Sulphates are harsh chemicals found in regular shampoos that dry out hair. Go sulphate-free, always.

Step 4 — Condition generously. Leave your conditioner on for at least 5 minutes before rinsing.

Step 5 — Air dry on a wig stand. Never scrunch, wring, or use a blow dryer without heat protectant.

“I used to wash my wig every week thinking I was being clean — turns out I was drying it out! Switching to every 2 weeks changed everything.” — one of our gorgeous clients

Quick recap: Wash every 10 to 15 wears, always detangle first, sulphate-free shampoo only, and air dry!

2. Detangling — Handle With Love 🪮

Your wig went through a lot to get to you, sis. Treat it gently.

Do this:

– Always use a wide tooth comb or paddle brush

– Start from the ends and slowly work up to the roots

– If you hit a knot, add a little leave-in conditioner or detangling spray and work through it patiently

– For curly units — use your fingers to detangle instead of a comb. Combs disturb the curl pattern and cause frizz that is very hard to undo

Don’t do this:

– Don’t use a fine tooth comb — ever

– Don’t detangle when the hair is completely dry

– Don’t start from the root and drag down — this snaps the hair and causes shedding

Quick recap: Wide tooth comb, start from the ends, and finger detangle your curls!

3. Keep It Moisturised 💧

Dry hair breaks. It’s that simple. And unlike your natural hair, your wig doesn’t produce its own natural oils — so you have to give it that love manually.

Every few days, treat your wig to:

– A light leave-in conditioner sprayed from mid-length to ends

– A few drops of argan oil or jojoba oil for shine and softness

– A good quality wig conditioning spray

This is especially important for Vietnamese and Brazilian human hair — because it’s real human hair, it needs moisture just like your natural hair does. Don’t neglect it!

“A little argan oil goes such a long way. My wig still looks brand new after 8 months!” — Thandi, Johannesburg

Quick recap: Moisturise every few days with leave-in conditioner or a light oil, especially on the ends!

4. Protecting Your Lace 🩷

Your lace is the most delicate part of your wig. HD lace especially — it’s ultra thin and ultra realistic, but it needs careful handling.

HD lace explained: HD stands for High Definition. It’s an ultra-thin, nearly invisible lace that blends seamlessly with all skin tones for the most natural hairline possible. It’s what we use in most of our premium units at Fashion Hair Studio!

Lace care essentials:

– Always remove your wig using a lace adhesive remover or bond remover — never just rip it off

– Apply glue and adhesive to your skin only, never the hair fibres

– Avoid sleeping in your wig whenever possible — if you must, wrap it in a silk or satin scarf

– Store it on a wig stand or mannequin head when not wearing it

Quick recap: Use bond remover to take it off, protect the lace from glue, and always store on a wig stand!

5. Heat Styling — Yes, But Carefully 🔥

One of the best things about Vietnamese and Brazilian human hair wigs is that you CAN use heat on them. Straight, curl, wave — the world is yours, babe. But there are rules!

Heat protectant explained: It’s a spray you apply to hair before using hot tools. It creates a barrier between the heat and the hair, preventing damage and keeping the hair smooth and shiny. Never skip this step!

Heat styling rules:

– Always use a heat protectant spray before any hot tool touches the hair

– Keep your flat iron or curling wand at 180°C or below

– For lace front wigs — be extra careful around the hairline. Excess heat near the lace can cause it to warp

– Give your wig a heat-free week every now and then to let it recover

Quick recap: Always use heat protectant, stay at 180°C or below, and give your wig heat-free days too!

6. Storing Your Wig the Right Way 🗄️

When your wig is resting, make sure it’s resting right!

Storage dos:

– Keep it on a wig stand to maintain its shape and let it breathe

– Use a silk wig bag when travelling

– Store away from direct sunlight — UV rays cause colour fading even on dark units

Storage don’ts:

– Don’t stuff it in a drawer or plastic bag

– Don’t store it while it’s still damp — this causes mildew and bad odour

– Don’t leave it near a window in direct sun

Quick recap: Wig stand at home, silk bag when travelling, always away from sunlight!

The Bottom Line ✨

A well-loved wig can last you 2 to 3 years — yes, really! We’ve seen our clients get incredible longevity out of their units just by following these simple steps.

Your simple weekly routine:

– Moisturise with a light leave-in spray

– Detangle gently with a wide tooth comb

– Store on your wig stand overnight

– Keep heat styling to a minimum mid-week
